Via Ferrata Schweifinen was an unforgettable adventure 🏔️ What is a via ferrata? Imagine something between climbing and scrambling but with a safety twist—a sturdy metal cable bolted into the mountain that you clip into for the entire route. The name via ferrata comes from Italian and means “iron way,” which fits perfectly with the metal cables, iron pins, and footholds you use along the way. This route above Zermatt has three sections, each more challenging than the last, but it’s still a manageable medium-level climb. You can choose to stop after any section if you need to. We completed the full tour in about 3 hours, including breaks, chats, and photos! The best part? The views! What an incredible adventure! We took a short cable car ride from Zermatt to Schwarzsee and then hiked to the Hörnli Hut, perched at 3,200 meters. Every step was a challenge—moving forward one foot at a time, breathing heavily, and soaking in the stunning scenery despite the rain. The Hörnli Hut stood out in the distance, sitting atop a massive rock with the iconic Matterhorn rising majestically behind it. There was something hauntingly magical about the view. First night in the tent, ✅ After a quick start to our acclimatisation hike, we set off early for the summit of Mettelhorn, above Zermatt. It was supposed to be a hot day, so we left before the sun crossed the mountains and while the air was still cool and fresh. We climbed higher and higher, feeling the burn, but the stunning views of the Matterhorn and glacier-covered peaks kept us going. 🏔️ Eventually, we left the grassy slopes behind. The thinner air slowed us down at over 3,000m (about 9,850 ft) above sea level. Along the way, we met a guy carrying his bike on his shoulder up the mountain! 🚴‍♂️ After chatting and walking together for a bit, he turned back—and rode down on his bike. Crazy stuff! 😄 We continued climbing until we reached Furggji at 2,983m (9,787 ft), where we decided it was time to descend. We stopped on a large rock during our descent and watched adorable marmots. On the way down, we admired some impressive waterfalls and made a quick stop at Trift House for homemade lemonade and cake. 🍋🍰 The path was washed out in a few places by streams and rocks, so we had to improvise.
